Over water

Today's writing prompt for the AtoZ challenge is: Over water. Here is my entry:

The path led to a small creek, and turned to follow alongside it’s banks. Sam followed the path, happy to be simply exploring on this sunny Saturday. Before long, a second creek merged with the first, and together they rushed faster in their quest to find the the ocean. The waterway widened, and took a hairpin turn. The path came to a dead end and Sam found herself on a small peninsula between the banks of the swiftly curving creek. A tall tree grew from the water’s edge at this spot, it’s branches hanging out over the water. And there, tied with thick rope, a swing hung from one of the thickest branches. It was gently swaying in the breeze, and lit by a patch of sun filtering through the trees.

She studied it as it hung there, challenging her to hop aboard. She reached for it, and nearly tumbled into the water trying to catch the rope which was just out of reach. Determined now, she poked through the underbrush and found a long stick, bent at one end in a loose sort of hook. It took a few tries, but she managed to catch the rope and pull it toward her. With some careful maneuvering, she positioned herself in the seat, her toes barely clinging to the bank’s edge. The swing pulled at her, as if anxious to get moving.  She gripped the ropes tightly and paused. Was it safe? She twisted to look up into the tree, studying the branch which was about to support her weight. As she shifted her weight, the wet bank gave way. Ready or not, the swing lurched free, taking Sam with it. The wind rushed through her hair and her stomach dropped as she went flying out over the creek. The ropes held. A thrill spread through her and her face broke out into a smile. Spray from the water tumbling over rocks showered her legs as she flew. She began pumping, pushing the swing higher. She felt like she was flying.

It dawned on her then. There was going to be no easy way off.

I've challenged myself to create a writing prompt and write a short response to it each day of April as part of the A to Z blogging challenge.  Read more about the A to Z blogging challenge here. Thanks for reading!

  1. A fun way to stop (the story or the swing, I'm not sure).
