Kayaks on the sea

Today's writing prompt for the AtoZ challenge is: Kayaks on the sea. Here is my entry:

Cut. Splash. Pull. Push.

Cut. Splash. Pull. Push.

The motion was repetitive and soothing. Their paddles made the only sounds on the wide still water. The trio had fallen silent, mesmerized by the meditative motion.

Cut. Splash. Pull. Push.

A breeze flittered over the water, barely ruffling the surface, and was gone. The shoreline was distant now, and their destination still far ahead. The sky domed as big and wide overhead as Sam had ever seen it. In this vast and wild space she was suddenly very aware of how small she was. And yet in another way she felt bigger than she had ever felt before. She could feel the energy of her two friends, paddling smoothly nearby. She felt connected to their energy, and to the energy in the water below her, which was still but yet somehow also moving. It was heavy and solid despite it’s liquid form. She felt a buzz rise up in her, almost like the buzz she could just barely hear coming from the paintings in the loft and in the garden room. Only it was coming from inside of her. She listened, tuning her senses to amplify it. The buzz spread and softened. She focused on the water in front of her.

Cut. Splash. Pull. Push.

I've challenged myself to create a writing prompt and write a short response to it each day of April as part of the A to Z blogging challenge.  Read more about the A to Z blogging challenge here. Thanks for reading!

  1. This blog reminds me of canoeing in Banff. Somehow, using a rower machine in my house, while good exercise, just isn't the same. I could, however, row along the Erie Canal.

  3. This is a beautiful piece. I felt the rhythm and motion of it and was completely drawn to the feelings of the main character.

Coming from the A2Z blog challenge. :-) http://gurrlontherise.wordpress.com
