Just Right

Today's writing prompt for the AtoZ challenge is: Just Right. Here is my entry:

They’d agreed to meet here at four, to plan, but Sam had arrived early, anxious to get started. There was no sign of Amanda and Leith, but that wasn’t surprising. What would be surprising is if they were both on time. It drove Sam crazy. She was never late, and usually early.

She sat on a log, digging her feet into the sand and tried to relax and enjoy the beauty of this desolate stretch of beach, but her body would not settle down. She stood, and walked toward the water. She reached down to pick up a smooth round stone, and then another. She stacked them, balancing them on a bit of driftwood, and then added another. The symmetry of the little stack was pleasing. She had six perfectly balanced round rocks stacked from largest to smallest in perfect symmetry when Amanda came running over the bluff. She was always running.

“Hey, that’s cool,” Amanda said, in greeting. “Leith not here? Oh good, I thought I was going to be the late one. Can I help?” Sam just nodded, accustomed by now to Amanda’s style of stacking questions without waiting for an answer. Amanda began to scour the beach, picking up rock after rock. How was she finding so many round ones? Sam thought she’d gotten them all from this area. Amanda returned, spraying sand as she dropped into a seated position in front of the mini cairn. She plucked the top few rocks from Sam’s structure and laid a long irregular stone down instead, followed quickly by several other odd shaped stones.

“Hey! Stop that. I liked mine the way it was! Make your own.” Sam said.

“It’s more of a challenge this way,” she said, smiling slyly at Sam. She added another, off center from the last, and the stack wobbled. She adjusted the stone slightly, and pulled back to admire her precariously balanced, off center and irregular structure. “Just right,” she said. Sam shook her head. And that’s when Leith jogged up and the whole thing toppled to the ground.

I've challenged myself to create a writing prompt and write a short response to it each day of April as part of the A to Z blogging challenge.  Read more about the A to Z blogging challenge here.  Thanks for reading!
