Kitchen Remodel Before & After

As you all know quite well by now, I've been remodeling my kitchen. I didn't plan to mention it at all on my blog, but the process just went on for so long I couldn't hold back a few little complaints here and there. So, I thought it was only fair, since I dragged you through my complaints about the process, to put a capper on that story by showing how it turned out. Besides, who doesn't love a little "before and after?"

Here's what the kitchen looked like before, from a few angles:

The entrance to the living room is through that small doorway on the right side. And there was a long narrow hallway (lined with cabinets, ovens, and my laundry machines) leading to the back hall and bedrooms.

Here is that same dark hallway from the other side, looking toward the kitchen.

This is a close up of the wall separating the living room and kitchen. As you will shortly see, we took out this wall and created a wide opening directly into the living room, effectively widening the kitchen to make room for an island, and creating better flow in the house.

Finally, here is another angle on the kitchen, showing off our red wall, and again you can see the dark hallway leading to the bedrooms. In the new design, this hallway has been closed off, giving the kitchen a back wall, and providing space on the other side for a laundry room and half bath (accessible from the bedroom hallway).

Without further ado, here is the new kitchen:

We closed off the long narrow hallway and placed our refrigerator, a pantry, and a desk space, on the new back wall.

We pushed out the wall separating the kitchen from the living room and left a five foot wide opening between the rooms.
Here is that same opening from the living room side, looking into the kitchen.

We added an island, and some under cabinet lighting.

We put in three skylights to add natural light, two flanking the stove, and one over a new desk area.

I'm pretty thrilled with how it turned out. And most importantly, it's DONE!

Here's one more look at the before and after, side by side for easy comparison.

Hope you enjoyed this peek at my before and after.

Have a great week!

  1. What a change. Nice job. Dad

  2. Wow! The change is so great it's almost difficult to see the old kitchen design. You did a really great job remodeling your kitchen. I like that it's more spacious and brighter now. The white paints, additional lights, and the skylights did wonders for this project. Congratulations!

  3. Wow! I like this home improvement project. You really did well in transforming the look of your kitchen. I really like the addition of the island. Islands add so much versatility to kitchens, both as an additional surface and place to store, work, or eat, and as a way to allow flow by provided constriction to an open floor.
